Alice's Top 5 Spring Running Trails in Wānaka

Spring is very much springing, the days are getting longer and our trails are lined with blossoms and daffidols. So whether you’re out for a cruisey jog or keen for something a bit more challenging, Wānaka has trails to cater for all. Here are some of my favourites!

Cherry Blossoms Wanaka

Outlet Track

The Outlet Track is a local favourite for good reason. Starting just down from the Outlet Camp Ground, this gentle trail follows the Clutha River from Lake Wānaka’s outlet to Albert Town. It’s perfect for a steady run, with minor undulations and plenty of spots to enjoy the spring scenery. The trail is well shaded, making it a great option on warmer spring days, and the sound of the river provides a calming backdrop as you cruise along. Take a break at Pembroke patisserie before making your way back along the trail.

The beauty of the Outlet track is also in it's links to many of the other trails. If you want to head out for a longer session there are plenty of options. You can continue on past Albert Town along the Upper Clutha River Track. You could cross the Albert town bridge and take Newcastle Track to enjoy the other side of the river. You can even jump on to the Hāwea River trail and cruise all the way to Hāwea Hotel for a beer!

Outlet track to Albert Town: 4km one way
Outlet Track to Luggate Red Bridge via Upper Clutha River Trail: 19km one way
Outlet Track to Luggate Red Bridge via Newcastle Track: 19km one way
Outlet Track to Hāwea via Hāwea River Trail: 17km one way

    Rocky Mountain Track

For some serious bang for buck, the Rocky Mountain Track in the Diamond Lake Conservation Area is the place to go. This 7km loop offers a mix of moderate to steep sections, with stunning views over Lake Wānaka and Mount Aspiring National Park at the summit.

A good mix of some native forest and alpine terrain, the climb up provides stunning views of snow-capped peaks in the distance. Conditions can be slightly unpredictable especially after rainfall and on cooler mornings so keep that in mind before you head out.

Rocky Mountain Trail: 7km loop, 500m elevation gain.

Millennium Track (via Wānaka Station Park)

Starting from the lovely Wānaka Station Park, the Millennium Track is a relaxing yet scenic route for springtime running. Cruise through Wānaka Station Park's abundance of daffodils and wild flowers before dropping down to Millennium Track and following the shoreline of Lake Wānaka. The trail is 12km towards Glendhu Bay but feel free to turn back whenever you are ready. The track starts flat and begins to undulate with a few punchy hills once you get to Waterfall Creek. Enjoy views of Lake Wānaka and the surrounding mountains the entire way. The trail is even better on a morning or evening jog with views of the lake glistening in the sun. Top tip: pack and towel, a mid run dip is irresistible at many of the secluded beaches you'll be passing.

Wānaka Station Park to Waterfall Creek: 2.5km one way
Wānaka Station Park to Roy's Peak Turn Off: 4.5km one way
Wānaka Station Park to Glendhu Bay Car Park: 12.5km one way

        Fern Burn Hut Track

If you're craving some more rugged technical terrain, the Fern Burn Hut Track offers a mix of forest and single track running. The 13.5km round-trip trail starts with a flat jog across some farm land. You then run through a magical native beech forest along side the Motatapu River on more technical terrain with some punchy climbs. This leads you out onto a single track through the alpine tussock and grasses to Fern Burn Hut. Stop to enjoy your packed lunch and a well deserved leg break then enjoy the slightly downhill trail on the way back!

Fern Burn Hut Track: 13.5km return, 550m elevation gain.

        Hāwea River Trail

The Hāwea River Trail is a stunning option for a longer, yet manageable, spring run. Starting at Albert Town Camp Ground, this 11km trail connects Wānaka to Lake Hāwea, following the Hāwea River the entire way. Enjoy the well maintained trail for an even feeling underfoot, making it perfect for an easy run or to increase your distance without tackling any major climbs. Watch the epic views as they pass by and take a break at the Hāwea wave to watch the surfers and Kayakers. The Secret Sauna at the end of the trail in Hāwea alway hits the spot but make sure you book in if you want to go!

Do remember that spring conditions don't always mean sunshine, if you're heading into the hills or up the mountains always be prepared. Ensure you check current track conditions and weather forecasts. It's not uncommon to need equipment such as micro spikes and ice axes when heading to the peaks.

These are just a few of my favourite Spring trails, you're absolutely spoilt for choice in Wānaka but no matter where you go you'll be rewarded with breath taking views and and an epic jog. So lace up those runners and head to the trails. I'll see you out there!
